Abstract

Key words Story Mapping Strategy Summarizing Narrative Text This Classroom Action Research aims to develop the eleventh graders ability in summarizing a narrative text by implementing Story Mapping Strategy. Story Mapping Strategy is a strategy used to identify the story elements including the important events of the story by using graphic organizer showing the important elements of the story and how they relate to one another. Then the Story Map was used to help the students to summarize the story. This strategy is selected since it provides a visual framework for understanding identifying and analyzing the elements of a story and it makes easier for the students remember the story. The subject of this research were thirtyeight students in class XI Social 4 SMAN 1 Kesamben who were in the first semester in 2012/2013 academic year. The research was conducted in one cycle consisting five meeting following four stages planning implementing observing and reflecting. The data of the study were gathered using the following instruments observation checklist field notes questionnaire and students summary writing. The activities of implementing the Story Mapping Strategy consisted of the following procedures (1) introducing the text/story to be read and provide each student with a blank story mapping (2) having the students read the text and find out the meaning of difficult words (3) having the students record the title of the assigned text on the story mapping (4) having the students analyze and record the other components of the story such as characters setting plot (problem goal events/episodes resolution/outcomes) and theme/moral message by discussing with their group (5) having the students present their work in front of the class (6) having the students do another task related to material with their pairs (7) having the students summarize the story by using the story map. The findings of the study indicated that the Story Mapping Strategy had improved the students ability in summarizing a narrative text. The study is considred successful when it met the criteria of success. The criteria of success is when the students who achieved 8805 70 in the preliminary study can increase at least 5 points after implementing the strategy. The 5 points were determined from the increasing score obtained from important event. On the other hand those who got 706 70 had different criteria of success they succeeded when they got at least 15 points increase. 15 points here were determined from the 5 points increase from important events 5 points from story elements and 5 points from words choice. After the researcher conducted one cycle the result showed that the score improved. The result shows that 3 students whose score was 8805 70 in preliminary study could increase their score more than 5 points. Meanwhile for 35 students whose score were 706 70 there were 9 students increased 15 points and 26 students increased more than 15 points. Based on the findings two suggestions are presented. First it is suggested for the teachers to use the Story Mapping Strategy for teaching reading narrative followed by summarizing as the post reading activity. It will help the students understanding the text easier. For the future researchers it is expected that the research on the use of Story Mapping Strategy can be continued with better lesson plan reinforcement of the students more various topics other text types and in digging appropriate technique based on their own field.
