The problems were the students had difficulties to understand expository text and they also had low motivation. The researcher therefore decided to use graphic organizers as a teaching technique as an effective alternative to solve this problem. 12288 12288 12288 12288 The research design used in this study was a Collaborative Classroom Action Research. The collaboration covers the process of designing the lesson plan determining the criteria of success implementing the action observing and doing reflections. The research procedure was planning implementing observing and reflecting. The subjects of this study were28fourth semesterstudents of English Department at STKIP PGRI Blitar in academic year 2013/2014. The research instruments were questionnaire observation checklists field notes students cooperative learning rubric and reading test. 12288 12288 12288 12288 The graphic organizers technique was implemented in two cycles comprising 4 meetings for Cycle 1 and 3 meetings for Cycle 2. The finding of the study showed that the implementation of graphic organizerstechnique to teach reading expository text would be effective when teacher s support and assistance were given in the whole stages of teaching and learning process by following the procedure that consisted of the following steps (pre-reading) giving pictures and videos brainstorming in form of questions and answers modifiedexpositorygraphic organizer diagram and discussion or short conference based on the cooperative learning roles. 12288 12288 12288 12288 The finding of this study showed that implementing the graphic organizers as a teaching technique could help students understand expository text much better than before when they were taught by using other traditional reading instruction. 25 out of 28 students passed the 65 as the passing grade. In addition in terms of students involvement in the reading class activity there was an increase from 80% in Cycle 1 to 86.33% in Cycle 2. In terms of students cooperation (Cooperative Learning Rubric) there was improvement 15 33% from 62 67% in Cycle 1 to 78% in Cycle 2. The result of students response towards the implementation of graphic organizers technique showed that there was 98 21% of students agreed that graphic organizers technique helped them to comprehend expository text. 83 91% said they felt motivated and 92 81% of them showed pleasure in joining the activities. 12288 12288 12288 12288 With the findings it is recommended that language teachers apply graphic organizers as their teaching strategy as a solution for their teaching problems in the classroom especially in conjunction with the teaching of reading. In addition especially to the English teacher of STKIP PGRI Blitar related to the weakness of the study in which three students still did not achieve the minimum passing grade he should take another action to improve his reading ability. For future researchers it is also suggested to use the result of this study as a reference in conducting research related the use of graphic organizers technique in teaching of other language skills and for any other level of students.
