Abstract

This study is aimed at improving the speaking ability of the second year students of MTsN Model Padang by using Learning Community strategy one of the elements in Contextual Teaching and Learning. This strategy is chosen since it provides practices and meaningful activities necessary for learning to communicate in the target language. The research problem is how Learning Community Strategy can be implemented to improve the second year students speaking ability at MTsN Model Padang. This study employs collaborative classroom action research design in which the researcher and the collaborator teacher work together in designing the lesson plan observing and making reflection. This research is conducted in a cyclic process starting from planning of the action implementation of the action observation and reflection. This research uses qualitative and quantitative data. The qualitative data are obtained from the observation forms field notes and interview guide. The quantitative data are obtained from performance assessments. The results of the study reveal that the implementation of the Learning Community strategy has improved the students speaking ability. It is revealed through the students involvement (81 83% at the last meeting of cycle 3) and performance assessment (the average score 74 86 at the third assessment). It is also revealed that there are some procedures of the Learning Community strategy that have improved the students speaking ability. The procedures are showing pictures and giving questions to lead the students to the topic dividing the students into groups making the topic related with the students real life giving a clear instruction clarifying the difficult words and discussing the words modeling the expected result of the task leading the classical discussion presentation making reflection toward the things that the students just have in the process of the teaching and learning in the classroom. With the findings it can be inferred that Learning Community strategy is not only effective in improving the students speaking ability but also in enhancing their involvement in the learning process. Therefore it is suggested that the English teachers apply Learning Community strategy since it is beneficial not only in improving the speaking ability but also in motivating students to speak and work together. Further it is also suggested that the English teachers consider Learning Community strategy-related aspects in teaching speaking so as to achieve the expected outcome. Finally it is suggested that further researches be done with applying Learning Community strategy in other language skills such as listening reading or writing.
