Abstract

This study aims to explore the behavior of the main character in the novel Dear Nathan by Erisca Febriani from the perspective of social norms. The novel was chosen because it represents adolescent life that is closely related to behavioral dynamics social conflict and moral values relevant to Indonesian society. This research employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive research design. The data sources consisted of words phrases and sentences that describe the behavior of the main character in the novel Dear Nathan. Data were collected through a literature study using observation and note-taking techniques. Data analysis was conducted through three stages namely data reduction data presentation and conclusion drawing. The results of the study indicate that the main character rsquo s behavior can be classified into two types covert behavior and overt behavior as proposed by B.F. Skinner. Covert behavior is reflected through internal responses such as feelings of guilt sadness emotional wounds motivation and concern while overt behavior is shown through observable actions such as social empathy responsibility concern for family as well as behaviors that violate social norms. From the perspective of social norms the study found behaviors that are in accordance with moral norms norms of politeness and religious norms. However there are also behaviors that deviate from social norms particularly legal norms such as acts of violence and vandalism. Based on these findings it can be concluded that the novel Dear Nathan represents the complexity of adolescent behavior influenced by social environment and life experiences. This study is expected to contribute to literary studies particularly those related to behavior and social norms and to serve as a reflection for readers especially adolescents in understanding and applying social values in everyday life.
