Abstract

Wireless network learning in vocational high schools (SMK) particularly in the Computer and Network Engineering (TKJ) program requires a balanced mastery of conceptual understanding and practical skills. Preliminary observations at SMK Negeri 10 Malang indicate that although 89% of students have achieved learning mastery approximately 11% have not yet met the Learning Achievement Criteria (KKTP) and require repeated network configuration practice. This condition suggests that the use of a single simulation medium has not fully accommodated students rsquo learning needs. Differences in the characteristics of network simulation media particularly between Graphical Network Simulator 3 (GNS3) which is more complex and Cisco Packet Tracer which is relatively simpler may result in different learning output. Therefore this study aims to describe students rsquo learning output after using GNS3 and Cisco Packet Tracer and to analyze differences in learning output between the two media in wireless network learning. This study employed a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental method with a nonequivalent control group design. The learning process applied the Discovery Learning model as this model encourages students to actively discover concepts and solutions through direct experience making it suitable for wireless networking materials that emphasize exploration analysis and practice-based problem solving. The research sample consisted of 64 Grade XI TKJ students at SMK Negeri 10 Malang comprising 31 students in the experimental group using GNS3 and 33 students in the control group using Cisco Packet Tracer. Data were collected through cognitive learning outcome tests in the form of multiple-choice questions and case studies as well as psychomotor assessments using practical observation sheets that had been validated and proven reliable. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive statistics and the Mann-Whitney U test due to non-normal data distribution. The results of the descriptive analysis showed that in the cognitive domain the GNS3 group achieved a mean score of 76.74 while the Cisco Packet Tracer group obtained a mean score of 81.58. The Mann-Whitney U test for the cognitive domain yielded a significance value of 0.138 ( gt 0.05) indicating no significant difference in cognitive learning output between the two groups. In the psychomotor domain the GNS3 group achieved a mean score of 65.32 whereas the Cisco Packet Tracer group achieved a mean score of 76.89. The Mann-Whitney U test results for the psychomotor domain showed a significance value of 0.015 ( lt 0.05) indicating a significant difference in psychomotor learning output with higher performance demonstrated by students using Cisco Packet Tracer. Based on these findings it can be concluded that the use of GNS3 and Cisco Packet Tracer does not result in significant differences in cognitive learning output but leads to significant differences in psychomotor learning output. Cisco Packet Tracer is more effective in supporting students rsquo practical skills in wireless network learning while GNS3 remains a potential learning medium due to its higher level of realism. Therefore the selection of network simulation learning media should be aligned with learning objectives material characteristics and students rsquo readiness.
