Abstract

Understanding and processing information play an important role in shaping students thinking skills especially in the subject of Two Variable Linear Equation Systems (SPLDV) in the form of story problems. This study aims to analyze students thinking in solving story problems based on information processing theory. This study is a qualitative descriptive study. The subjects of this study consisted of three ninth-grade students. The research instruments used included test sheets interview guidelines recording devices validation sheets and researcher notes. The results showed that the thinking process of all subjects began with the entry of stimuli in the form of questions through the sensory register with the sense of sight. The information received triggers attention and when the problem is understood perception occurs. The information received is then transferred to long-term memory by retrieving mathematical concepts to solve the problem. This retrieval causes differences in the subjects thinking processes. The first subject was able to work using the elimination and substitution methods and obtained the correct answer. The second subject solved the problem using the substitution method experienced forgotten loss but still obtained the correct answer. The third subject s retrieval often experienced forgotten loss which resulted in an incorrect answer. Rehearsal in subjects can also be seen from the repetition of information to obtain the desired result.
