Abstract

This study aims to describe the meaning of Chinese culture in visual symbols in the film The New Year s Eve of Old Lee and to reveal students perceptions of cultural symbols in the film. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method with two data sources the film The New Year s Eve of Old Lee and 37 students from the Mandarin Language Education Program at Malang State University class of 2024 who have completed the Cross-Cultural Understanding course. The instruments used include a scene excerpt table and an interview guide. Data collection techniques included documentation and interviews while data analysis was conducted using the Miles Huberman and Salda ntilde a model divided into several stages data reduction data presentation and drawing conclusions. The results of the study show that there are 17 symbols that represent Chinese culture namely Chinese drums dragon dances lanterns fish (f uacute ) clenched fists dumplings oranges red Chinese clothing round dining tables traditional Chinese couplets red envelopes apples firecracker accessories chopsticks tanghulu and traditional Chinese home interiors featuring traditional Chinese paintings deity statues and ancestral photos. Additionally most students perceive the Chinese cultural symbols in the film as symbols of good luck happiness and the dispelling of negative energy. Students also assessed that the film could serve as an effective educational medium for introducing Chinese culture in a contextual enjoyable and relevant manner aligning with the materials required for lectures.
