Abstract

This research investigates English Language Teaching (ELT) students rsquo perceptions of prewriting strategies and their influence on writing proficiency. Recognizing writing as one of the most challenging language skills this research emphasizes the role of prewriting strategies such as brainstorming mind mapping and outlining in supporting idea generation organization and writing fluency. Using a quantitative and qualitative design the study involved 30 undergraduate ELT students and collected data through Likert-scale questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. 46.6% Quantitative analysis shows that brainstorming is the most preferred technique followed by mind mapping and outlining. This is evidenced by the results of the questionnaire in which 46.6% of students agreed and strongly agreed with using brainstorming while the rest chose mind mapping and outlining. Students perceived prewriting as beneficial for organizing ideas reducing writer rsquo s block and improving writing structure although some reported challenges related to understanding the strategies time constraints and lack of motivation. The mean score of 20.77 shows a generally positive perception of prewriting yet qualitative responses highlight the need for clearer instruction and modeling. The findings show that prewriting strategies significantly aid the writing process but their effectiveness depends on proper implementation and student familiarity. This research suggests that teachers should explicitly integrate and model prewriting strategies in ELT writing instruction. Future researchers are encouraged to use larger and more diverse samples and experimental designs to strengthen the evidence of their impact.
