Students with dyslexia face challenges in processing written words identifying letters and associating letters with corresponding sounds. When a student with dyslexia should learn a foreign language these difficulties become more complicated. In learning EFL students with dyslexia face double challenges as they have problems processing their native language. Moreover there are differences in cultural factors especially in the writing system and orthography. The orthographic system is a convention that regulates the way a language is written including the relationship between letters sounds and meaning. Although dyslexia has been widely studied in the context of English as a foreign language research on students experiencing dyslexia success in learning EFL particularly for students in Indonesia remains limited. The purpose of this research is to explore how a student with dyslexia learns English in the EFL context particularly in writing and reading skills. This current research used Second Language Acquisition Theory to examine the development process of an EFL learner with dyslexia. This study used an interpretative qualitative research approach using a single-case study design to explore and understand the phenomenon. This study focused on the 12-year-old boy rsquo s experience named Mark (pseudonym) in learning EFL. The participant was selected based on purposive sampling. He was chosen as the participant in this study because despite the participant having dyslexia he had good English proficiency especially in writing. To investigate this case the researcher conducted in-depth data collection that required multiple sources of information from observations interviews field notes and documents. The data were analysed using thematic analysis. The findings show that the participant is more proficient at spelling English (with an opaque orthographic system) than Indonesian (with a transparent orthographic system). These findings contradict the notion of language acquisition mother tongue is always supposed to be dominant. Differentiating learning strategies has been shown to increase learning motivation and reduce learning barriers effectively. This research makes an important contribution to the inclusive EFL teaching notably in understanding language acquisition patterns in special needs students.
