This study explores the experiences of English Language Teaching (ELT) students in using ChatGPT to support thesis proposal writing. While AI tools are increasingly integrated into higher education little is known about how students critically and meaningfully engage with them in academic contexts. Using a qualitative case study design six ELT students at a state university in East Java were interviewed through semi-structured interviews and the data were analyzed using Braun and Clarke rsquo s (2006) thematic analysis. The findings reveal that students mainly used ChatGPT to overcome writer rsquo s block generate ideas and improve the efficiency of writing. ChatGPT also assisted in structuring paragraphs refining linguistic accuracy and enhancing students rsquo confidence. TAM and UTAUT frameworks further explained students rsquo adoption where perceived usefulness ease of use performance expectancy and social as well as institutional factors shaped acceptance. However limitations were identified ChatGPT was less effective in methodology and literature review due to concerns about accuracy and depth. Risks such as fabricated references superficial arguments and potential over-reliance were also acknowledged. Overall ChatGPT functioned as a digital scaffold that increased productivity and engagement but required critical awareness and ethical guidance. The study recommends integrating AI literacy into academic writing courses to maximize benefits while preserving originality and academic integrity.
