Abstract

The rising passion in English Language Teaching among educators sparks an interest in teaching English speaking by focusing on cognitive and affective aspects especially in regards to employability prospects for university students when speaking is the skill that will be judged upon the most. The purpose of this research is to explore the use of cognitive and affective strategy when speaking English as a foreign language from a public university in Malang. A quantitative survey design method was used to gather data from 111 university students from various faculties. The data revealed a frequent use of cognitive (M 3 3) and affective (M 2 82) strategies among participants with prominent sub-strategies such as repetition immersion note-taking planning self-encouragement and taking emotional temperature. The findings suggest that affective learning strategies play a facilitative role in supporting cognitive strategy use despite its lack of use comparatively. This highlights the need to explore affective learning methods and how it affects cognitive learning such as the case in affective learning model in the field of teacher immediacy. Future research should explore the impact of teacher immediacy learning model in Indonesian classrooms and how cognitive and affective strategies affect English speaking ability.
