This study investigates the implementation of group roles to promote positive interdependence and individual accountability as two fundamental elements of Cooperative Learning (CL) in a primary English classroom. Although CL has been widely studied limited research has explored how group roles support its practice in primary EFL contexts. A qualitative case study was conducted in a single classroom consisting of 27 second-grade students and an English teacher. Data were gathered through classroom observations and a semi-structured teacher interview then analyzed using Miles Huberman and Saldana rsquo s framework. Four themes were generated fostering individual accountability through group roles building positive Interdependence through cooperation the teacher rsquo s role in facilitating group roles and challenges in implementing group roles. The findings indicate that assigning structured roles such as manager inquirer writer and presenter helped foster students rsquo positive interdependence and individual accountability with the teacher rsquo s role as an active facilitator being crucial for its success. This study highlights that the group roles strategy is effective in supporting CL and recommends further research to explore students rsquo perspectives and applications at higher-grade levels.
