Abstract

p This research focuses on analyzing sentence structure based on the grammatical functions and sentence types in news articles. Two media outlets from both local and global bases are analyzed which are BBC News and The Jakarta Post. This research examines how sentence structure based on grammatical functions and sentence types is used in both media outlets. This article uses a qualitative descriptive research method by examining the use of sentence structure on both media outlets. The analysis is limited to political news specifically in the election news section. There are a total of 5 articles that are analyzed. The results indicate that both media outlets use almost the same sentence structure. Overall both media outlets use all types of sentence structures. In terms of grammatical functions both media outlets show that sentences containing transitive verbs and intensive or linking verbs become the most dominant. Meanwhile in terms of sentence types complex and simple sentences are the most widely used. This However several types of sentence structures rarely appear such as sentences containing prepositional verbs ditransitive verbs and complex transitive verbs. Besides that compound and compound-complex sentences also rarely found. /p
