Abstract

This study discusses the development of an interactive learning media called Jiapu Puzzle designed to address the difficulties faced by students at SMA Laboratorium UM in understanding the kinship system in Chinese culture which is a crucial aspect of Mandarin language learning. Initial observations indicated that students experienced confusion in distinguishing kinship terms from the paternal and maternal sides in Mandarin and felt bored with conventional oral teaching methods. Therefore this study aims to develop a learning media that can facilitate students rsquo understanding visually contextually and engagingly. The media development used the ADDIE model (Analysis Design Development Implementation Evaluation). The analysis phase was conducted through classroom observations and interviews with subject teachers to identify students rsquo learning needs. In the design phase the media was designed as an interactive puzzle board presenting two family tree structures paternal and maternal sides equipped with narration Hanzi illustrations and other interactive elements to support visual comprehension. Next the development phase included the creation of the physical media and validation by media experts and content experts. The validation results stated that the media was highly feasible to use. Revisions were made based on expert feedback including improvements in layout color selection and the addition of ten question cards as an evaluation tool for students rsquo understanding. The implementation phase took place in class XI IBB at SMA Laboratorium UM where students were divided into groups to try the Jiapu Puzzle media directly. Student responses were collected through questionnaires. The implementation results showed very positive responses the majority of students stated that the media was interesting harmoniously integrated design and content displayed clear text and images had an appropriate layout used easy-to-understand language and was easy to use. Moreover students felt an increase in enthusiasm and understanding of the kinship system in Chinese culture through the use of this media. Overall this study concludes that Jiapu Puzzle is a highly feasible and effective learning media as an innovative alternative in Mandarin language learning especially on the topic of the kinship system. However this study still has limitations particularly as it does not include summative evaluation and measurement of the long-term impact on student learning outcomes. Therefore further studies are recommended to explore these aspects more deeply.
