Abstract

This study aimed to determine the extent to which students anxiety levels correlate with speaking achievement. A mixed-method with correlational design was used in this study. Quantitative data were collected through a questionnaire adapted from the FLCAS (Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale) as well as speaking scores obtained from lecturers while qualitative data were obtained through open-ended questions to explore students experiences with speaking anxiety. This study was conducted at Universitas Negeri Malang with 30 students of the English Language Education study program batch 2022 as research subjects selected through convenience sampling. Quantitative data were analyzed using Spearman rsquo s Rank Correlation through SPSS while qualitative data were analyzed based on the set coding. The results of this study revealed that there was a strong negative correlation between students rsquo anxiety level and speaking achievement with a value of r -0.711 indicating a strong negative relationship between the variables and the significance level (2-tailed) is 0.000 le 0.05 suggesting that the correlation is statistically significant.
