Abstract

The integration of character education across all school subjects including English as a Foreign Language (EFL) has become an important priority in fostering students rsquo academic competence alongside moral development. Reading comprehension serves not only as a core skill in EFL but also as a medium for instilling values through meaningful narratives. Moral stories in particular provide authentic contexts for introducing virtues such as courage perseverance and responsibility while strengthening students rsquo understanding of texts. This study investigates the effectiveness of incorporating moral stories into EFL reading instruction to enhance both comprehension skills and character awareness. A quantitative pre-experimental method with a one-group pre-test and post-test design was employed chosen for its suitability in exploratory classroom research where control groups are not feasible. The participants were junior high school students who took part in a series of reading lessons featuring the Indonesian folktale Timun Mas supported by discussions and reflective activities. Data were gathered through reading comprehension tests and questionnaires administered before and after the intervention. The results indicate a measurable improvement in reading scores and positive student perceptions regarding the integration of moral content into English lessons. These findings suggest that the use of moral story-based instruction can serve as an effective approach to promoting language proficiency and character development aligning with the broader educational goal of embedding character education within the curriculum.
