Abstract

This study explores the learning strategies used by a successful English for Young Learners (EYL) student in developing English-speaking skills both at home and at school. Using a qualitative case study approach the research focused on one elementary school student enrolled in a speaking club program at a Cambridge-based school in Malang. The participant was chosen based on performance in a placement test. Data were gathered through unobtrusive observation and semi-structured interviews with the student a parent and the English teacher. Thematic analysis was used to identify key learning patterns. The findings showed that the student applied a variety of strategies including cognitive strategies like repetition and vocabulary practice metacognitive strategies such as planning and self-evaluation motivational strategies driven by interest and encouragement and social strategies through interaction with peers and family. The learning environment including teacher support parental involvement and access to digital tools like YouTube and Google Translate also played a role in supporting the student rsquo s speaking development. The study suggests that when young learners are guided and supported in using appropriate strategies they can become active and independent in their language learning process.
