Abstract

Mastery of vocabulary can be a foundation for students to improve other skills. Technology development is an alternative new media that can be used to learn and master vocabulary. One of them is the British Council Website. It is known that students often experience difficulties in learning due to the limited vocabulary they have this condition can be caused by the low motivation of students to master vocabulary. This study aims to investigate the British Council Website as a medium that can affect students motivation and determine intrinsic and extrinsic factors that influence students motivation to master vocabulary. This study used a descriptive mixed method. The research subjects were 35 students who responded to the questionnaire and eight students to be interviewed for the class of 2021 at one of the universities in Malang who used the British Council Website at the beginning of the semester. The instruments used in this study were closed questionnaires and structured interviews. The results from questionnaire were calculated through descriptive statistics on Microsoft Excel and the results from interview were transcribed and encoded the data to several themes. The results showed that most students satisfied and motivated to master vocabulary while using the British Council Website and the intrinsic indicators such as effort attitude and desire became a motivating factor for students to continue learning and mastering vocabulary.
