Abstract

Reading is a fundamental activity for language learners as it relates to the thinking process and can enhance other language skills. Therefore learners need to be more aware of the reading process and conscious of what they can do to improve their comprehension. The need aligns with the concept of metacognitive awareness which facilitates learners to control their learning process. Metacognition can be integrated into the learning process by utilizing various metacognitive reading strategies. The present study attempts to determine the level of students rsquo awareness of metacognitive reading strategy and the frequency of metacognitive reading strategy used by the students. The research was conducted in April 2023 the quantitative method was used through survey research design. This survey adopted a survey MARSI-R questionnaire as a data collection instrument. The research subject was 30 ELE students 2016 in the English Department at Universitas Negeri Malang. The data was gathered through the questionnaire link shared in the ELE students 2016 Whatsapp Group using Google Forms. Mokhtari rsquo s standard was used to interpret the data that had been calculated. The finding of this study revealed that ELE students 2016 achieved an overall reading strategy score of 3.84 indicating that the students in this research possessed a high level of awareness of metacognitive reading strategy and high metacognitive reading strategies use. In addition the Problem-solving Reading Strategy was the most preferred by ELE students while the ELE students least used the Support Reading Strategy. The research suggests that lecturers should guide the students to prompt metacognition during learning primarily through reading. This research focus is limited to several aspects the following researchers are expected to conduct another research from different perspectives of language skills settings and respondent levels and use more instruments to gain a deeper understanding of students thoughts.
