Abstract

Reading comprehension skills are crucial in the learning process as they enable students to analyze information draw conclusions and connect new knowledge with existing knowledge thus gaining new insights. Good reading skills can support the development of students critical and analytical thinking skills and encourage active student engagement in classroom discussions. This study aimed to determine the effect of the Directed Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA) model on the reading comprehension skills of fourth-grade students at SD Negeri 1 Banjar Anyar. This study used a quantitative pre-experimental approach with a one-group pretest-posttest design. The sample consisted of 21 students selected through a saturated sampling technique. The data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The results of the descriptive statistics test showed an average pretest score of 74.95 and a posttest score of 87.19. This improvement indicates a significant change in students reading comprehension skills after implementing the DRTA model. Furthermore the results of the hypothesis test showed a significance value of 0.001 lt 0.05 meaning H0 was rejected and H1 was accepted. Thus there is a difference between the results before and after treatment which means the DRTA model has an effect on improving the reading comprehension ability of fourth-grade students at SD Negeri 1 Banjar Anyar. In addition the results of the N-Gain calculation show that the DRTA model is quite effective in improving students reading comprehension ability with an average N-Gain of 0.45 which is included in the moderate category.
