p Indonesia is located in a seismically active zone along the Pacific Ring of Fire necessitating earthquake-resistant structural design especially for irregular building geometries such as U-shaped floor plans commonly used in urban environments. This study aims to compare the seismic performance and cost efficiency of five-story U-shaped building structures in Malang City using two structural systems Moment Resisting Frame System (SRPM) and shear walls. Four structural models were analyzed using ETABS 22 for structural behavior simulations and Microsoft Excel for cost estimation based on AHSP standards and local construction pricing regulations. The results reveal that the inclusion of shear walls in Model 1 and Model 2 significantly increases lateral stiffness resulting in shorter fundamental periods reduced inter-story drifts and lower P-Delta effects compared to Models 3 and 4 which utilize SRPM only. Model 2 demonstrated the best seismic performance and met all safety thresholds making it the most recommended option for earthquake-prone areas. In contrast Model 4 had the lowest construction cost but showed less favorable structural performance. Although incorporating shear walls leads to higher initial costs the analysis indicates long-term benefits through reduced structural damage and lower post-earthquake maintenance expenses. Thus selecting the optimal structural system requires balancing seismic resilience and cost efficiency. This study offers valuable insights for planning multi-story buildings in high-seismic-risk areas particularly for educational or office facilities with complex architectural forms. /p
