p This study examines students politeness strategies when communicating with lecturers through WhatsApp messages. This research is necessary to understand the students rsquo message patterns based on the politeness principle and to comprehend the implementation of politeness strategies influenced by cultural background in sending English messages to lecturers. The study used descriptive qualitative as the research methodology with data sources of students messages to lecturers in the collection of screenshots to answer the research question how do the patterns of discourse the students commonly follow when texting their lecturers take shape and how do students maintain the politeness principle in Indonesian culture when using English when conversing with their lecturers on WhatsApp. 32 students participated with a total of 91 screenshots of WA messages being collected. The results indicate that the messages sent by students form patterns within the discourse with the structure of greetings self-introduction message purposes apologizing thanking and closing greetings. The students maintain Indonesian culture by applying ldquo Sir rdquo or ldquo Ma rsquo am rdquo as Indonesians would always address elders or lecturers with ldquo Pak rdquo or ldquo Bu rdquo using a specific folded hand emoticon to show respect and continuously apologizing for their messages. /p
