Abstract

Bullfighting has been one of long-standing issues in relation to the relationship between humans and animals. Practices towards animals involved in a bullfighting arena have been represented in several movies. One of them is Ferdinand an animated comedy-drama movie released in 2017 highlighting the practice of bullfighting in Spain. This study attempts to examine ecocritical values represented in the movie. Two key values in ecocriticism to understand human-animal relationship proposed by Garrard (2004) are used to critically analyze the movie. These values include anthropomorphism and moral universalism. The findings of this study show that anthropomorphism is represented through the depiction of the animals as characters that have qualities of humans in terms of emotions thoughts and personality. In addition moral universalism is represented through the depiction of human characters Nina and his father who show moral attitudes different from those practiced by their culture in relation to bullfighting by show compassion towards the animals and take care of them well. These two values are represented as the resolution of the conflicts in the movie. The conflicts stem from the notion of anthropocentrism and speciesism (Permatasari 2019). The anthropocentric value manifests in the depiction of human characters (e.g. matadors and bullfighting breeders) as the center of rules and values who define the bulls rsquo existence. In this case it is either to be slaughtered in the ring for humans rsquo entertainment or in the meat factory as humans rsquo consumption. In addition the speciesism is depicted through the system the humans create to conquer animals. In the movie it explicitly manifests in breeding farm electric fence fighting arena and meat factory for instance. These two values are represented as the source of conflicts between the animals and the human characters. In conclusion the findings have showed that anthropomorphism is used as a strategy to arouse stronger empathy on animals as it enables the movie to make the animals alive as though they were like humans. Moral universalism is used to show that an ethical stance towards animal welfare can be made regardless cultural values where humans live.
