Abstract

In the perspective of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) irrational beliefs are the source of negative self-concepts. Irrational beliefs consist of Demandingness (DEM) as primary irrational beliefs and self-depreciation (DEP) catastrophising (CAT) low-frustration tolerance (LFT) as secondary beliefs. This study aims to examine the influence of the four irrational beliefs directly or indirectly on students negative self-concept. This study uses a correlational design. The research population was 968 students in class X of SMK PGRI 3 Malang. The research sample of 108 people was obtained by simple random sampling. Data collection was conducted using The Attitudes and Belief Scale-II Abbreviated Version (ABS-II AV) and Personal Self-Concept (PSC) instruments which have been translated into Indonesian. Both instruments are given to students in the form of printouts. Data analysis uses path analysis with the help of SPSS 25.0 for windows. The results of the study showed that of the four irrational beliefs only CAT and LFT had an effect on students negative self-concept. The results of this study contradict Albert Ellis hypothesis which views DEM as a primary irrational belief and DEP CAT and LFT as secondary irrational beliefs.
