p This study aims to investigate the various language contestations the proportion of top-down and bottom-up types and functions in signage. The research method used in this study is descriptive qualitative considering that the data is in pictures and text form. This research focuses on the linguistic landscape along the main and surrounding streets in Embong Arab of Malang East Java Indonesia. 110 data in the form of pictures were collected using documentation techniques. The results of this study show that Indonesian is the most widely used language 40 signs out of 110 (36%) in monolingual Indonesian. English occupies the second position followed by Arabic and Javanese. The use of Arabic in Embong Arab is oddly not very prominent despite its large ethnic Arab population. In addition Javanese the local language used in Malang was found to have minimal signage. In addition there are 97 signage (88%) that belong to the bottom-up type while only 13 signage (12%) belong to the top-down type. Both types have informative and symbolic functions the researcher also concluded three further functions of signage in the Embong Arab area of Malang commercial purposes identity portrayal and regulation or prohibition pointer. /p
