Abstract

Being working students is not easy as imagined and there are certainly some obstacles in carrying out this choice. They have divided their time between time to do some task assignments as students and time to do task assignments from their office as workers. There are also some adverse effects that they feel from their choice as working students such as tending to make students tired both physically and mentally feeling burdened by their excessive involvement and preferring to stick to one of their routines and feeling burdened because of many tasks from campus. Therefore a private Islamic college in Bekasi provides different learning classes for working students by learning completely online so that they can do their work and study without experiencing the adverse effects that they are likely to experience. Online learning is carried out in all subjects especially in English lesson. Teachers need to know that students rsquo perception in the learning process is the most fundamental aspect the teacher needs to implement if they negatively affect online learning activity they might not give their best performance because they are not confident enough to do it and students rsquo motivation is considered a substantial element for the fruitfulness of online learning. The research aims to discover the working students rsquo motivation and perception in term of attitude benefit and challenging in English online learning. The study was conducted in one of private islamic college in bekasi). Qualitative descriptive was used in this research. In collecting the data two instruments consisting of a questionnaire were distributed via Google form to thirty-one working students in grade first and second grade and interview to six working students. A research step adapted from Ponto (2015) was employed comprising seven steps (1) Questionnaire Development and Validation (2) Small Scale Try-Out (3) Questionnaire Distribution (4) Data Analysis (5) Interview (6) Result Description and (7) Conclusion. In collecting the data two instruments consisting of a questionnaire were distributed via Google form to 31working students in two and four and interviewed the English teachers. The results became the basis for determining the following steps collecting and analyzing the data. The research findings revealed that working students has high motivation and positive attitude in English online learning. Meanwhile there were various benefits that felt by working students during English online learning flexible efficient and confident in self-learning and having experience in using technology. However in term of challenging in English online learning that had by working students less of focus lack of bonding community technical issues and lack of practice. This study however also discovered some unexpected result that diverge from previous established research. The integrative motivation is higher than instrumental motivation which means the main purpose of working students rsquo motivation in English online learning it is not because to have a good grade in school or college and a better job or higher salary in the workplace but the motivation is students desire to comprehend and interact with native English speakers as they study the language.
