Abstract

Vocabulary plays a critical role in learning a new language. The four language skills mdash listening speaking reading and writing mdash will all be improved with better knowledge of vocabulary. On the other hand limited vocabulary may make it more difficult for language learners to communicate and comprehend spoken and written texts. In order to have sufficient vocabulary students need to have good vocabulary mastery. Students are considered to have sufficient vocabulary when they can communicate efficiently and accurately with their peers. To achieve this purpose English teachers can employ several strategies in teaching vocabulary. Thus the current study is designed to investigate vocabulary teaching strategies employed by teachers in Islamic senior high schools by referring to the principle of the Four Strands proposed by Nation (2007). The design is survey research which uses two instruments to collect the data. English teachers who teach in Islamic senior high schools or Madrasah Aliyah including public and private institutions in West Sumatera were the study s target demographic. A questionnaire and interviews were used to collect responses to the survey s instruments. The questionnaire was used to dig up data concerning vocabulary strategies used by the teachers. It was developed and created by the researcher herself based on Nation s (2007) principle of the Four Strands. Meanwhile the interview is used to expand on the data received from the questionnaire since the researcher can ask specific questions to elicit more information. In addition the participants can elaborate on their responses. Using these two types of instruments allowed the researcher to expand the area of the study in order to investigate the strategies used by teachers in teaching vocabulary. The findings of the study suggest that this study might give an insight into the fact that more strategies need to be implemented by teachers to enhance vocabulary learning. It is consistent with Nation s suggestion that equal time and attention be given to each strand. This means that teachers should balance and vary strategies and activities appropriate to each of the four strands. This has something to do with teacher professional development associated with the strategies they perform. Further study may be needed to address the challenges that teachers face in the field of practice when employing all those strategies so that diverse strategies of teaching vocabulary can be addressed. More training needs to be conducted to provide teachers with a good role model for enacting vocabulary-driven activities. The findings of the study also suggest that as the study on vocabulary teaching strategies was conducted in the area of Islamic senior high schools in West Sumatra there is a possibility that all the collected data might not be able to represent the teaching strategies performed by EFL teachers teaching in senior high schools in general. Therefore having more coverage in the number of samples involving more diverse areas is recommended for further study.
