Abstract

Listening is considered the most challenging skill compared to the other skills leading the students to face several problems and making them feel unmotivated when they try to comprehend listening skills. In dealing with this situation the lecturer should find the appropriate strategy so that it does not affect students rsquo quality of their learning of English. A reading-while-listening strategy is a promising strategy because it assists foreign language students with additional input namely written text (transcription subtitle caption etc.) to enhance their understanding. So it goes without saying it could boost their comprehension in listening skills. Moreover the strategy combines podcasts with transcripts as recent technology which could support students in improving their listening comprehension. This study aimed to improve EFL students rsquo listening comprehension using the implementation of the podcast with transcripts through a reading-while-listening strategy. This study was conducted in Universitas PGRI Madiun involving 21 second-semester students of the English Language Education Department and employed classroom action research as a research design to provide solutions for the problems which influence students rsquo listening comprehension. This study was implemented in a cycle consisting of 4 meetings with 1 extra meeting for conducting the final test. Meanwhile the preliminary studies were conducted previously in 2 meetings. Several stages of classroom activities were employed during the implementation of the reading-while-listening strategy. Firstly the audio podcasts taken from VOA Learning English website were given to students in each meeting. They were encouraged to listen and pay attention to the audio to experience the real listening act. Furthermore in the second listening repetitions transcripts of conversations from the audio podcasts were displayed with the purpose of assisting students in confirming and clarifying the information they listened to and solving their unknowns. Third the audio podcast is played again along with students answering the worksheet given at each meeting and followed by a classroom discussion. Therefore the students would get used to identify the topic of the text identifying the keywords recognizing vocabulary guessing meaning from context and using real-life knowledge from the audio podcast they listen to. The instruments used to collect the data in this study were the interview guide observation checklist observation field notes listening final test and questionnaire. The results of this study showed that students rsquo listening comprehension improved. This improvement can be seen from the result of students rsquo mean scores on the listening tests 68. 90 for the initial test and improved to 81. 95 for the final test which successfully fulfilled the criteria of success determined. Moreover after analyzing the result of the observation checklist and observation field notes it was revealed that students got used to being actively involved in the discussion and showed their enthusiasm during the teaching and learning process. The result of students rsquo responses through the questionnaire also indicated that the students had positive responses since they felt motivated and interested in implementing the proposed strategy. Therefore the strategy could answer the research question of this study by drilling students rsquo listening skills in each meeting through the help of written text using podcast transcription. The students were encouraged to comprehend the listening material and be active during the teaching-learning process. Then the students could feel confident enough in the discussion when the reading-while-listening strategy was applied. Thus the reading-while-listening strategy serves as an effective teaching strategy especially for low-level students to improve their comprehension in listening skills. Henceforth this study s findings can give recommendations related to the implementation of reading while listening to other lecturers in their listening classes. Moreover this study offers several insights for lecturers of listening courses to involve the appropriate teaching strategy to provide a motivating learning atmosphere and encourage students to improve their quality listening skills.
