Abstract

Providing written corrective feedback through Microsoft Words had become a new method in controlling and assessing the learners rsquo work especially in thesis writing. It happened not only because of the pandemic era that switched the offline learning to online learning but nowadays the use of technology also has been integrated by English lecturers into the teaching and learning process. However due to the fact that providing written corrective feedback through Microsoft Word which was in online form it was quite new experiences for the learners since they were accustomed to have offline form. Therefore this study aimed to describe learners rsquo perspectives on written corrective feedback through Microsoft Word the difficulties attacked them during receiving written corrective feedback through Microsoft Word and also their feedback preferences. I used a descriptive qualitative as the research design for this research since it could provide an inclusive description confirmation and understanding in achieving the objective of the research. This study was held in English Language Education Program at a public university in East Java with 52 Master rsquo s Degree learners from 2019 and 2020 cohorts as a selected subject of the study since they were the first cohorts who experienced written corrective feedback through computer-mediated as a result of a shift of learning platform from face-to-face to online due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Furthermore the online questionnaire semi-structured interview guidelines and official documents were used for collecting the data. The data about learners rsquo perspectives were collected by distributing an online questionnaire to all of the respondents and were analyzed quantitatively by revealing the overall spreads of the scores including the measurements of the percentages and the mean scores. Then an interview session was also done with five voluntary participants for having the information in depth. This was supported by official documents from the participants as proof in order to know that they received written corrective feedback through Microsoft Word. Then I analyzed the data descriptively in order to achieve the best interpretation of the findings. The research showed that the learners received written corrective feedback through Microsoft Word their thesis writing improvement well. The reason was that the learners were familiar with Microsoft Word as the most used for receiving feedback asynchronously yet occasionally they need synchronous feedback to achieve deeper suggestions or feedback regarding their writing. Therefore they perceived that having Microsoft Word for receiving written corrective feedback was more appropriate and more enjoyable during online consultation. Furthermore the findings also revealed that the most difficult part faced by the learners was understanding the feedback since sometimes it caused misinterpretation and consumed a lot of time for revising when the feedback was given implicitly. Perhaps this was caused by their different feedback preferences since most of the learners preferred to have written corrective feedback which stated explicitly explicit feedback which is clearer and easier to be understood while few of them liked to have written corrective feedback implicitly. The findings of this study can be a reference for other educators in assessing the students rsquo writing during online or hybrid learning. The study also ends with suggestions for further researchers who are interested in this topic by investigating further the concept of written corrective feedback through Microsoft Words using different subject other than English learners who also received feedback through computer the perspectives from the advisors or even observing written corrective feedback using another computer software used like form Google Classroom Video Recording ZOOM and so on.
