Abstract

ABSTRACT Factors Contributing to Students Indiscipline Behavior at Public Secondary Schools in Freetown. Key Word Factors Contributing Student Indiscipline Behavior Public Secondary School. This research aims to investigate the various factors contributing to students indiscipline behavior at public secondary schools in Freetown. Understanding these factors is crucial for developing effective strategies to address and mitigate indiscipline issues. Indiscipline is the lack of discipline or failure to adhere to rules norms or behavior codes. It involves a disregard for authority rules or order. On the other hand discipline refers to the process of training individuals to follow the rules or a set of behaviors by using punishment as a means to correct disobedience when required but also encompassing self-control and adherence to a set of principles or guidelines. Discipline involves adherence to rules and self-control leading to positive outcomes while indiscipline represents a lack of adherence to rules and order often resulting in negative consequences This research employed the quantitative descriptive research survey type that deals with Students rsquo Indiscipline behavior at public Secondary Schools. This descriptive survey research design aims to gather accurate information using a questionnaire via Google form to the selected public schools through students parents and teachers to understand the current status of a phenomenon and draw valid conclusions based on the facts discovered. The research data was obtained through questionnaires. The researcher administered the questionnaire to a representative of 422 samples of teachers students and parents of the selected public schools to gain insights into the underlying causes of indiscipline. The data was statistically analyzed using the SPSS Application to identify correlations and significant factors. The findings of this study reveal that the factors contributing to student indiscipline such as Student-based Home-based School-based and Societal-based factors greatly impacted students behavior at public schools. Among these factors school-based factors seem to be the most problematic factor as it carries the highest percentage of respondents who agreed to that fact with 54.38% according to the calculation obtained from the average level of achievement of variable latent. Home-based Factors at 53 50% is also very high. Students-based Factors at 52.17% are very high as well as societal-based factors at 51.33% which is also very high. By understanding these findings educators and policymakers can implement targeted interventions to promote discipline and create a conducive learning environment. This research will provide the Ministry of Education and other educational policymakers an insight into the factors contributing to students rsquo indiscipline behavior. The policymakers will of course be guided as to how they can design a curriculum that will focus on character development.
