Abstract

Profanity is the same as bad word. In every educational level can agree that profanity should be banned from the classroom. But in this case the profanity is the main subject of the research. It was used to make the students to be confidence to talk in English. English-speaking itself is a mandatory skill to communicate in English. Some people felt the shyness when they want to speak in English. This research tried to find out whether or not the profanity helps the students to speak English confidently. The researcher used survey research. In the survey research the instrument that the researcher used mainly was questionnaire and interview. The questionnaire was spread out to the respondents by using Whatsapp in form of Google Form. The respondents were the English department college students of Universitas Negeri Malang. They should be on their second semester or above to be the respondents of this research. The researcher also recorded the interview. The question for the interview was from the research question and the researcher develop it as the interview started. The result of the research was that they said the swear words to express their feeling with their friends. The respondents used swear words more to their best friend rather than to just friend. it showed that swearing can be the representation of the closeness among the students. The swear words itself helped the students to be relieved although some of them thought that swearing was still a bad thing. Swear words were not really helpful for the students to learn English speaking but it was useful for them to describe their feeling and by swearing they can talk more like the native speaker.
