This study examined the use of reading strategies by EFL university students based on their reading proficiency levels and personality types. It also investigated the differences in the use of reading strategies and the interaction between reading proficiency levels and personality types on reading strategy use. This study involved 248 second-year university students majoring in English Language Teaching. The students were grouped across their reading proficiency levels and personality types. To know the students rsquo reading proficiency levels online reading test consisting of 50 items was employed. It defined them into high and low reading proficiency levels based on approximate Vancouver English Centre (VEC) level. Additionally their personality types were measured using the Big Five Personality Test developed by Golberg (1992). One of the categories of personality types extroversion was taken to categorize the students as extroverts and introverts. As a result there were four groups of students namely high proficient readers with extroverted personalities high proficient readers with introverted personalities low proficient readers with extroverted personalities and low proficient readers with introverted personalities. After grouping the students the author invited the students to join on-screen reading sessions after grouping them. Each session required the students to read an English text which they accessed online through their electronic devices (i.e. laptops mobile phones and tablets). They were also asked to report the reading strategies employed in reading the text on-screen by filling the Survey of Reading Strategies (SORS) questionnaire containing 38 items. The findings revealed that each group of students has its own reading strategy preferences. Significant differences in the use of reading strategies were discovered between groups with different reading proficiency levels and personality types. Moreover the interaction between reading proficiency levels and personality types was disclosed only on the use of global and socio-affective strategies. Nevertheless reading proficiency levels were revealed as the significant predictor in determining the use of reading strategies compared to the students rsquo personality types. Regardless of their personality types students with high reading proficiency levels utilized global problem-solving and support strategies more frequently than low proficient readers. Meanwhile students with low proficient readers were inclined to use socio-affective more frequently than their counterparts. The study eventually highlighted some conclusions drawn by comparing the findings of the previous investigations. Pedagogical implications and future research recommendations were also presented in this study.
