A narrative text is a fundamental genre it is chosen as an instructional genre in a freshman composition course. Based on numerous research many students struggle to write narrative material. According to the previous studies the most common errors committed by students are grammatical errors. This result indicates that the students still have difficulty in grammatical context. The researcher wanted to know if same issues still enconter among Indonesian students.The SMAN 4 Malang was chosen by the researcher to see if they still had grammar issues when producing narrative text. The researcher used a qualitative research design in this study to learn about the most common challenges students face when producing narrative text. The researcher used Betty Azar rsquo s classifcation to investigate the students rsquo narrative text. The classification are past tense singular-plural word order word choice spelling capitalization and punctuation. There are 15 students as the respondents. The data for this study was gathered using a document analysis technique. In order to evaluate the students difficulty in generating narrative text the researcher employs a test as an instrument. As a result there are three common mistakes that students make when writing narrative text. Verb tense capitalization and punctuation are three of them.
