As vocabulary is important to be learned in learning English language the appropriate learning strategy is needed by the learners. Previous studies have discussed this issue for many years and there is no definite answer to these questions. Hitherto they are still arguing whether the VLS in context or VLS in isolation is the best way to be used in extending the students rsquo vocabulary. Therefore the researcher conducted study in purpose to analyze the effect of both those vocabulary learning strategies. Certainly the innovative and clear instruction of vocabulary strategy was used in this study in order to avoid ambiguous results. In addition considering other factors that contribute to the success of students rsquo vocabulary learning process present study reckons cognitive styles as there is relationship between learning style and learning strategy. The present study employed the 2 x 2 Quasi Factorial Designs. The freshman students of FLSP Reading 1 of Undergraduate Program majoring Mechanical Engineering Muhammadiyah Malang University were the subject of the study. The research was conducted in eight meetings including pre-test and post-test. There are two instruments in this study a vocabulary test and GEFT. In analyzing the data the researcher conducted the two independent t-tests as it is powerful nonparametric static. The findings showed that the students who used VLS in context get higher score than those who used VLS in isolation. It can be seen from the result of the independent sample t-test which revealed a significant difference in the vocabulary scores on post-test. Furthermore the researcher analyzed the results by crossing it with students rsquo cognitive styles. The results proved that there is a difference preference between FD students and FI. In experimental group where VLS in context was used the students with Field Independent cognitive style outperformed students with Field Dependent cognitive style. Meanwhile in control group where VLS in isolation was used the FD students performed better than FI students. It can be concluded that using vocabulary learning strategy will boost students rsquo vocabulary learning process. Even though the results showed that VLS in context is more effective than VLS in isolation the teacher must consider the students rsquo cognitive styles because the present study revealed that FD and FI students performed better with different vocabulary learning strategies.
