Keywords taboo words positive impoliteness Conviction Movie Communication is an action of delivering message or information which can be done through conversation. There are rules and strategy in communication that people should pay close attention such as politeness strategy proposed by Brown and Levinson (1987). One act that threats the harmony between interlocutors is the use of taboo words. Ekstrom (2008) classified taboo words into five categories which are obscenity profanity insult cursing and epithet. Culpeper (1996) explained that the use of taboo word is included as impoliteness superstrategy. This study will focus on finding the application of positive impoliteness strategy especially taboo words seen in the conversation between main characters of the Conviction movie. The research design of this study is qualitative descriptive. The primary data is the written form or the transcription of the utterances from the main characters dialog. In this study the categories of taboo words mentioned by Ekstrom (2008) seen in the Conviction movie were analyzed based on the positive politeness strategy of Brown and Levinson (1987) and positive impoliteness superstrategy of Culpeper (1996). The researcher collected 59 data of taboo words which were found in pre-climax part of the movie (44 data) and climax (15 data) of the Conviction movie. From those 44 data in the pre-climax part of the movie the most frequent type of taboo words which appeared was Obscenity fuck shit (45.45%) and the second was Profanity God Christ sakes Jesus Christ (18.18%) the third was Epithet goddamn bitch damn (15.9%) fourth was Insults you fuckers you bitch (13.63%) and the last is Cursing fuck you damn you (6.81%). From 15 data in the climax part the most frequent type of taboo words which appeared was Epithet goddamn bitch damn (53.3%) and the second was Obscenity fuck shit (26.6%) the third were Insults you fuckers you bitch Epithet goddamn bitch damn and Cursing fuck you fuck her which shared the same percentage (6.6%). The result of the study showed that there was shift of functions of taboo words especially for obscenity words which functioned as expression of swearing and intensifier device in introduction and climax parts into more complex functions in pre-climax part with additional function as positive politeness strategies when used in compliments. The result also showed that not all taboo words functioned as positive impoliteness superstrategy. The discussion of taboo words in this study was related to the impoliteness superstrategy. The use of taboo words by main characters showed that not all taboo words were the implementation of impoliteness superstrategy. Some of the uses of taboo words indicate the intimacy between main characters which sometimes appeared as an intensifier. However the scope of this study is limited to the source where the data were taken from which is a movie. Therefore this study still requires improvement from Linguistic students who can conduct studies to analyze the phenomenon of taboo words in real situation.
