Keywords music videos writing ability narrative text senior high school Writing is considered to be the most difficult macro skill to master. Different from oral communication writing requires an author s understanding to write so the text she/he produces could be comprehended on its own. It can be more difficult for EFL learners since they should learn both the language and the way to write a good text. Based on the preliminary study it was found that in SMA Negeri 4 Malang the ability of XI Science 2 students in writing narrative texts has not been satisfactory yet since there were only 10 out of 28 students passing Minimum Learning Mastery or Kriteria Ketuntasan Minimal (KKM). It was also revealed that the problems faced by the students not only lied upon the lingustic feature but also difficulty in generating idea and organizing those ideas to be conveyed in a text. This means that the difficulty of students in writing narrative texts was particularly in the stage of prewriting when the students started to write. In addition the media provided by the school had not been optimized in the teaching and learning activity. Realizing those problems the researcher used music videos which were selected to be implemented in the teaching and learning process. The design of the study study was Classroom Action Research conducted in one cycle consisting of four stages. They are planning implementation observation and reflection. The subjects of this study were 28 students of XI Science 2 program in SMA Negeri 4 Malang. In this study two collaborators were involved to assist the researcher. In addition there were four research instruments utilized in order to collect the data consisting of observation checklists field notes scoring rubric and questionnaires. During the teaching and learning process using music videos the researcher implemented process genre approach in which the teaching and learning writing focuses on the process and purpose of writing based on genre. Four stages of this approach were Building Knowledge of Field (BKoF) Modeling of Text (MoT) Joint Construction of Text (JCoT) Independent Construction of Text (ICoT). During the stage of BkoF the students discussed the narrative texts given while in the stage of MoT they received the model of narrative text constructed based on the music video displayed. The students were assigned to compose narrative texts in pairs in the stage of JCoT. Meanwhile during the stage of ICoT the students composed another narrative text individually. After the implementation of action which was conducted for four meetings the study showed successful result both in terms of students participation and students ability in writing narrative texts. The criteria of success in the present study required at least 82% of students (23 out of 28 students) participated in the teaching and learning process and 75% of students (21 out of 28 students) passed the Minimum Learning Mastery (KKM) required by the school. According to the findings the percentage of students actively participated during teaching and learning process was 92% (26 out of 28 students). Meanwhile after the implementation of action there were also 26 students whose scores passed the KKM . Those findings showed that music videos can be utilized to facilitate students in improving their ability in writing narrative texts. In accordance with the findings of this study there were some suggestions provided for English teachers school principals and future researchers. It was suggested for English teachers to utilize music video as the instructional media to facilitate students in learning writing or the other skills. Before using music videos the teachers were recommended to carefully select the music videos and adjust them to the students as well as considering the teaching techniques to implement the music videos. For school principals it was suggested to provide facilities to support the implementation of music videos such as an LCD screen an LCD projector a computer/laptop and a loud speaker. Meanwhile for the future researchers who are interested in conducting further studies in the similar field it was recommended to develop the application of music videos and explore further pertaining to the teaching and learning by using these media.
