Keywords fun with reading program extensive reading reading drama Reading is a language skill that gives many effects to the other three language skills. Reading also helps students acquire language components. Basically there are two kinds of reading namely intensive reading and extensive reading. Although less preferable extensive reading is as important as intensive reading. It has benefits in developing students proficiency. One of English teachers in Senior High School 5 Malang develops a program called Fun with Reading which is based on extensive reading. This research was conducted to get better understanding about Fun with Reading program including purposes of the program steps and the assessment of the program obstacles that the teacher and students face in the program and students responses towards the program. The design of this research was descriptive qualitative. The data of this research were the description of Fun with Reading program. In the data collection process the researcher conducted observation interview and distributed questionnaire. The data were analyzed descriptively through organizing grouping describing and comparing with some related theories. The result of the analysis shows six findings. First the purpose of Fun with Reading program was to improve students reading habit and vocabulary and it also served as variation in teaching narrative texts. Secondly the steps of Fun with Reading program were divided into two main activities reading and drama production. The steps of reading activity consisted of warm-up questions reading materials introduction reading and summarizing. The steps of drama production consisted of selecting stories by voting creating groups retelling stories creating draft of the drama script and performance. Third the assessment of Fun with Reading program was taken from both reading activity and drama production. For reading the teacher assessed students reports and summaries and for drama the teacher assessed cooperation performance content and fluency. Fourth before implementing Fun with Reading program the teacher prepared reading materials and examples of drama script. The reading materials were mostly in abridged version. It was also found that the teacher and students face various obstacles in conducting the Fun with Reading program. The teacher had limited time and lacked reading materials. Students faced more obstacles such as new vocabularies sleepiness feeling nervous and conflicts in the group. Last students iii gave various responses towards Fun with Reading program such as liking the program because of its benefit improvements for the program and various suggestions for the program. The responses showed that although students faced some problems in the implementation of the program they tried several things to enjoy doing the program. The results of the study showed that the program brought good impact to students not only in their learning but also in their study habit and behavior. For the improvement of the program some suggestions were made such as the improvement of the number of reading materials reading in school s parks or library and creating reading community. For future researchers some recommendations were also made such as implementing such program to other learning environment and comparing the class that did the program with the class that did not do the program.
