Keywords speech act misinterpreting perlocutionary force Language is used to produce utterance to communicate with each other. Spolsky (1998 1) asserts that language is used to communicate meaning and also to establish and maintain social relationship in the process of communication. To express themselves people do not only generate utterances that are based on grammatical structures but they also perform actions in their utterances. But the hearer does not always understand the intended meaning of an utterance from the speaker. This study will focus on finding the misinterpreting perlocutionary force in communication among students in the Pragmatics and ESP classes. The research design of this study is descriptive qualitative. The primary data are taken from the conversation among students in Pragmatics and ESP classes. In this study the researcher wrote and recorded some conversations which succeeded and failed in direct and indirect locutions given to the students. Then the researcher analyzed the factor that making misinterpretation in indirect locution based on the principles of Relevance Theory by Sperber and Wilson (1995) and the speech act theory by Yule (1996). The researcher selected 31 conversations among students and lecturer in Pragmatics and ESP classes which are divided into 15 direct locutions and 16 indirect locutions. From those 15 direct locutions the researcher finds out that 86% (13 conversations) of direct locution is delivered successfully to the hearer both in understanding the illocution and doing the perlocution of the utterances. Only 14% (2 conversations) which failed because the students did not do the perlocutionary force of the utterance. It contrasts with 16 indirect locutions given to the students which only 19% (3 conversations) of them succeeded in understanding the illocution and doing the perlocution of the utterance. 81% (13 conversations) of them failed because the students did not catch the intended meaning and did not do the perlocutionary force of the utterances. Most of them could not understand the speaker s expectation and understand the utterance from the speaker as a statement only. Besides they also misinterpreted the perlocutionary force of the utterances because they did not want to do it although they could catch the intended meaning of the utterances. Since this research only focuses on the conversation in the class it needs improvement from future researchers to conduct study in wider range field of communication whether it has different result. Moreover this research also can be used to create effective communication which can be understood easily by the hearer and solve the problem whenever misinterpreting happen during the conversation. The lecturers of linguistics can also use this research to teach their students and give information to them about misinterpreting in communication that may happen whenever they talk to each other.
