Key words improving reading comprehension PQRST strategy Based on the finding of the conducted preliminary study the teaching of reading in MA Nurul Jadid Paiton Probolinggo did not facilitate students to be skillful in reading yet. The students reading ability is poor. Therefore this research is designed to improve the students reading comprehension through the use of PQRST (Preview Question Read Self-recite/Summarize and Test) strategy. The PQRST activity follows the procedure of preview question read sel-recite/summarize and test. The research employed a collaborative classroom action research design in which the researcher and the collaborative teacher worked together in preparing a suitable procedure of PQRST strategy designing the lesson plan determining the criteria of success implementing the action observing and doing reflections. The subjects of this research were 32 eleventh graders of MA Nurul Jadid Paiton Probolinggo East Java in the academic year 2010/2011. This research was conducted in 2 cycles each of which comprised two meetings. The data of this research were obtained through (1) observation sheet to obtain information about teacher s and the students activities and performance during the implementation of the PQRST strategy (2) field notes to note the data beyond the coverage of the observation sheet and (3) test to identify whether or not the students make progress in reading comprehension. The results show that the implementation of PQRST strategy in the teaching-learning of reading comprehension can improve the students comprehension skill. It can be identified that after the implementation of the action there was an improvement on the number of students who got the score of greater or equal to 75. In Cycle 1 18 students out of 32 students or 56.25% had fulfilled the criteria of success. In Cycle 2 26 out of 32 students or 81.25% got the score of greater or equal to 75. The steps of PQRST strategy includes preview identify what they will read about and listing the difficult words used in the text question to understand or to catch the idea of the prepared questions read the teacher read the text clearly then asking some students to re-read the text to clarify the difficult words and to discuss the words the students have listed to guide and to assign the students to read the text to answer the prepared questions. Self-recite/Summarize the students share the result of their work to the class and give comments and responses on the volunteers report and Test the students sat on a test to know their understanding. Based on the findings it is suggested that teachers use PQRST strategy as one alternative in the teaching of reading comprehension in the classroom. For other researchers the finding can be used as a reference in conducting other research in similar field.
