Abstract

The Phoenix and Turtle written by Shakespeare has been analyzed from various perspectives. However critics have not discussed it in the perspective of seeing the main characters which are the phoenix and the turtle dove. Thus this article tries to prove that their functional existence is crucial for the poem and whether they are chosen intentionally. Further it also evaluates their symbolism in the relation with the structure of the poem. Several findings can be drawn. Firstly the phoenix and the turtle dove hold a very significant role for the unity of the poem. Hence replacing them with another animal will ruin the structure of the poem. Secondly most of aspects that are presented in the poem implicitly and intentionally create many tragedies. It leads to the conclusion that the tragedies symbolize human that is consumed by greed. The symbolism can be manifested by these birds only replacing them will make the symbolism not delivered well.
