In modern era profanity word has been regarded as rude and offensive behavior in society. People use profanity words to insult or express their emotions when they are annoyed. Sometimes people not only insult or laugh at others using cursing words but also using profanity words to make jokes or get used to daily communication. Even if some people speak certain languanges they still tend to use their native languange for pronunciation because they are used to using these languanges from birth. This study aimed to investigate the type and possible reason of swearing by participants who were exposed to both their native languange and foreign languange. Therefore students daily ectivity were selected as participants in this study. The research design in this study is descriptive qualitative. To collect the data researchers recorded conversations between students during their daily activities on campurs and also given some question session. The recording is then transcribed for researchers to find and mark any curses they find. In addition the researcher grouped the profanity word into seven classifications and five reasons. The research findings show there are 22 profanity words that mostly are used by students English and Literature of Universitas Negeri Malang in their daily conversation. According to the classification of Wardaugh (1986) profanity words are divided into seven as shown excretion humorous death body function term religious metter mother-in-law and animal term. There are five reason explained Rothwell (1973) to get attention to discredit someone or somethig to provoke to create interpersonal identification to provoke catharsis. As a result having different social background in the conversation does not have a significant impact on the use of profanity. Moreover profanity is very contextual so it cannot be judged as polite or impolite but depends more on the way the speaker and listener communicate the profanity. Overall profanity provides significant benefits in communication between students of English and Literature at Universitas Negeri Malang. Future others may expand the data source and further analysis of profanity use among other groups or any linguistic problem related to swearing.
