Abstract

E-commerce like Shopee has begun to be favored by many people. There are several challenges faced by sellers in that platform one of which is the review by customers. In giving reviews the use of Face Threatening Act (FTA) and politeness strategy is necessary to maintain other customers rsquo satisfaction and face. This qualitative descriptive method draws upon Brown and Levinson rsquo s (1987) politeness theory to analyze politeness strategy and FTA used by Shopee users. The data of this research were utterances from Shopee review which consisted of FTA and politeness strategy that were collected by interviewing informants who had used Shopee for more than four years. The findings show that there were 7 FTAs and 7 politeness strategies in utterances during the interview. The speakers applied all types of politeness strategies bald on record positive politeness negative politeness and off record. The researcher found out there were 1 bald on record 3 positive politeness 1 negative politeness and 2 off record strategies. Both interviewer and interviewees mostly threatened the addressee rsquo s negative face.
