This study was intended to describe the EFL learners rsquo writing styles in an argumentative essay of the Department of English Universitas Negeri Malang. The writing styles that the researcher analyzed were diction tone and sentence structure. The descriptive qualitative design was used in this study by involving 23 students as the participants. The instrument of the research was a writing prompt. The students were asked to write an argumentative essay and the researcher analyzed them by identifying and classifying students rsquo writing styles based on the choices of words (diction) tone and sentence structure. In analyzing the essays the researcher used the theory from Gorys Keraf to analyze diction Jerry Jenkin rsquo s theory to analyze tone and Rozakis rsquo theory to analyze sentence structure. The findings showed that (1) popular word was the most used diction in the students rsquo essays (2) optimistic tone was the most used tone in students rsquo essay (3) all types of sentence structure were used in students rsquo essays. The conclusion of the study was that students have their own writing styles so it is suggested that the teachers help the students to explore their writing styles by introducing them to the kinds of diction tone and sentence structure more in the learning activity.
