SUMMARY Agustin Ayu Chandra. Speaking Performance and Grammatical Competence of Non-English Department Students across Cognitive Learning Styles and Strategies Inventory for Language Learning (SILL). Graduate Thesis. Department of English Faculty of Letters Universitas Negeri Malang. Advisors (I) Dr. E. D. Laksmi M. Pd. M.A. (II) Dr. Suharyadi S. Pd. M. Pd. Key Words Speaking performance grammatical competence cognitive learning style Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL). The correlation between speaking performance and grammatical competence has been an issue which is still debatable. Some studies claim that grammar awareness may weaken the ability to speak due to the strict rules in language expression ((Hulstijn amp Hulstijn 1984) (Terrell amp Krashen 1983)). Some others reveal that increasing students rsquo grammar mastery can lead into speaking improvement ((Master 1994) (Leeman et al. 1995) (Alanen 1995) (De Graaff 1997) (Manley amp Calk 1997) (de Jong et al. 2008) (Kianiparsa amp Vali 2010) (Kong 2011)). The difference in the scores of English learners is believed to be influenced by several factors. Two of them are cognitive learning styles and learning strategies (Williams amp Burden 1997). This research was conducted on 30 students majoring in Management and Accounting STIE Malangkuceswara. By calculating the correlation the researcher looked for the relationship between speaking skills and grammatical competence through an argumentative speaking test and a written grammatical test. An attempt was also made with two questionnaires to look at the students rsquo cognitive learning styles and the Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL). The results of the analysis showed that there is no significant correlation between speaking scores and grammatical tests. However FI students outperformed FD students in speaking and FD students outperformed FI students in grammar knowledge. In addition those who scored higher on either speaking or grammar tests used more cognitive and meta-cognitive strategies than those who scored lower. Finally this research provides a gap for further research on language skills and the factors that influence it. The results of this study are also intended for teachers to consider various student learning styles and methods that best suit their needs.
