Abstract

Cross-cultural understanding is important for German language learners because it can provide new insights and avoid culture shock because cultural differences will always exist in our environment both in communication, human relations, and service. One of the literary works that can be used as a medium for learning cross-cultural understanding is Joseph von Eichendorff's poem entitled "Im Abendrot". This poem is a very important work to understand how the state of German literature and culture in the Romantic era. This includes the choice of words, writing style, and the experience of the writer's soul and the spirit of the era. Therefore, there is need for analytical research to find out the meaning of the poem Im Abendrot by Joseph von Eichendorff in order to be able to relate the poem from a cultural point of view and to relate the situation at the time of making poetry with different cultures and times. This study uses descriptive qualitative research methods. Data collection techniques used are literature studies from journals and books. The results showed that the poem "Im Abendrot" by Joseph von Eichendorff was imaginative, symbolic, and subjective. With the open-ended nature of poetry, it is the side of knowing culture that is interesting and makes the reader wonder. In this poem, the culture of the romantic period is referred to as the culture of love, which is always grateful for God's blessings that have been given and is always devoted to Him by showing that every couple must be ready for the day of separation, namely death. This is inversely proportional to the state of today's culture where technology is advanced and modern so that people are more concerned with real things or evidence and not too much imagination about something they consider "empty".
