Abstract

This paper aims to discuss languages and dialects spoken in the Javanese speaking society in Nganjuk and analyze the diglossic pattern that is reflected in everyday communication practices. The information was obtained from three main public places Alun Alun Kota Nganjuk and Cak Imin Coffee Shop to observe the interaction that occurs in informal situation as well as Kelurahan Jatirejo to observe the interaction that occurs in formal situation which are wedding party Haul ( a local culture tradition that sending prayer to cultural elders who already passed away) and funeral ceremony. The writer also conducted informal interview with three local figures to supplement the participatory observation. The study shows that people in Nganjuk mostly speak in Javanese in their daily conversation. Their Javanese was seen to represent different geographical and social varieties. With respect to the geographical varieties or dialects the Javanese speaking community in Nganjuk speak using Mataraman Javanese (MJ) Jombang Javanese (JJ) and Bojonegaran Javanese (BJ). Meanwhile for the social dialects the community investigated employed three speech levels ndash Krama Madya and Ngoko. Krama is mostly used in formal occasions as a sign of respect to the audience or interlocutors Madya is generally used to interact with new people and Ngoko is widely employed among friends to indicate closeness and intimacy.
