Abstract

Speaking is one of the most used skills in communicating because it is commonly conducted daily. However students also have difficulties in implementing speaking. The researcher found the problem when doing the preliminary study in students of X-IPA 1 class of SMA Nasional Malang. More than 27 out of 34 students who came in front of the class to speak in English had some difficulties related to their speaking skill. In terms of the scores 85.3% of the students scored below the minimum passing grade of the school. This study was conducted to improve the speaking ability of the students by implementing a picture-cued storytelling strategy. The research design used is Collaborative Classroom Action Research. Classroom Action Research was done through one cycle which consisting of 4 stages planning implementing observing and reflecting. The instruments to collect the data were a speaking test questionnaire observation checklist and field note. The research subjects were 34 students of X-IPA 1 class of SMA Nasional Malang. The research finding reveals the students successfully improve their speaking skill. Every aspect of speaking of students fluency vocabulary pronunciation grammar and coherence also showing improvement. 82.4% of the students score more than the minimum passing grade which means the study has successfully reached its criteria of success. The results of the questionnaires showed that the positive response percentage in each of the questions was more than 50% which means the study had achieved the criteria of success. The data recorded in the observation checklist and field note shows that the students are also involved actively in the implementation with enthusiast and motivation.
