Abstract

Keywords game women s bodies sexuality objectification male gaze Point Blank The rising popularity of video games makes it become a useful medium to study about gender issues by focusing on the game s characters. From the surface some games seem to treat male and female characters equally. Female characters do not appear as merely the additional characters in the game narratives. They are presented as playable characters with similar duty as their male counterparts. Female characters are given the role such as villain and heroine to represent the powerful women figure. Nevertheless the depiction of powerful female figure in the context of game which perceived to be masculine is followed by sexual portrayal of women bodies. Female characters body is idealized through the way mass media today presents women s bodies body that is considered attractive according to male audiences spectacles. These two contrasting portrayals can be seen quite obviously in Point Blank the game. Many of the female characters features are designed to make the impression that women are as strong as men. For example the female characters are presented in masculine context and conventional patriarchal ideology. Yet the portrayals of female characters body are still crucial since the idealization of women body results in the objectification by male audience. From the sexualized portrayal of women s bodies women are objectified simply through the gazing act. A deep analysis of voyeuristic and fetishistic pleasure in figures of ideal body and the characters outfits presented in Point Blank game reveals that the portrayals of women s bodies are designed for male gaze. Thus by looking at the women figures male audiences can take women bodies as objects to be look at and experience the pleasure. From this can be considered as a form of objectification towards women.
