Keywords Slang Word-formation processes Lyric. One of the communication kind of genres that is commonly used by young people is slang. The spreading of slangs is very fast especially among young people because the influences of medias. As well as mere words slang words also undergo some processes in its formation (Melanie 2004 41). Those slang words are formed through the process word-formation process. This study is concerned with discussing about slang word-formation processes in Avril Lavigne s songs. The research design of this study is descriptive qualitative. The primary data are the written form from the lyrics in each Avril s songs. In this study the theory of word-formation processes by George Yule (2010) in his book The Study of Language is used to analyze the formation process of each slang word. In detail this study aims to answer three research problems (1) what kinds of slang word formation processes appear in the lyrics (2) what is the most common slang word formation processes in the lyrics (3) what are the meanings of slang words that appear in the lyrics The data were collected through document analysis the researcher tried to find and identify the slang words in the lyrics by marking classifying and analyzing the slang words. The result shows that from 240 data not all processes of word-formation appear in the lyrics. Seven processes of word-formation are not found in the lyric. On the other hand the processes of word-formation that are used in the lyrics are clipping (55.83%) blending (43.33%) borrowing (0.42%) and multiple processes (0.42%) The most common word formation process that appears in Avril Lavigne s songs is clipping. Clipping occurs when a word or more than one syllable is reduced to a shorter form. In this research the clipped word that mostly appears in the lyrics is word cause or cuz for example a lyric Cause you re fucking crazy rock n roll . The term Cause or Cuz is considered as a clipped word because originally it comes from word Because which is reduced to a shorter form Cuz . Nowadays young people prefer to use the clipped form Cuz or Cause instead of Because . In this research also found that Avril often use slang word and clip the g alphabet in the last word that is called G clipping for example a lyric a lyric Rockin up MTV . As Abdillah (2005 1) said The processes by which words become slang are the same as those by which other words in the language change their form and meaning . Kinds of slang word formation process that appear are 134 clipping 104 blending 1 borrowing and 1 multiple process word. Most of the meaning of slang words that found in Avril s songs is related with egomania which means a person who considers themselves to be very important and able to do anything that they want to do. iii In this study there are some other findings which are slang words that cannot be categorized into word-formation processes. Another of slang words that found in the lyrics are categorized as metaphor homophone hyperbole and idiom.
