Abstract

Keywords textbook conformity standard of content Due to the increasing need for the use of English as communication mean the Indonesian government decided that English has to be taught in secondary school as a compulsory subject (Yuwono 2005 1). Kitao (1997) states that in improving the quality of English teaching and learning it is important to understand the five essential components of language instruction one of which is the materials. Brown (2001) states that the most obvious and most common form of materials support for language instructions comes from textbooks. according to Pusporini (2009 7) a good textbook provides good teaching materials and good teaching materials will result in good learning. Furthermore Nunan proposed four criteria of a good textbook one of which is that the materials should be clearly related to curriculum they serve. And based on Nunan s criteria the researcher would like to investigate the conformity of the English textbook used in senior high school with the 2006 School Based Curriculum/ Standard of Content. This study is conducted with the purpose of analyzing how much the English textbook entitled Developing English Competencies 3 confirm the 2006 Standard of Content. Specifically this study is aimed to analyze the textbook s conformity with the 2006 Standard of Content in terms of (1) the standard of competence and the basic competence (2) the short functional and monolog texts (3) the transactional and interpersonal texts and (4) the four language skills. This is a descriptive study which focuses on content analysis that attempts to analyze the textbook used for the twelfth grade at senior high school. The source of data was the English textbook entitled Developing English Competencies 3. The instrument used in the data collection was a checklist developed by the researcher. Based on findings it was found that the conformity of the textbook with the 2006 Standard of Content in terms of the standard of competence and basic competence was 92% in terms of the short functional and monolog texts 86.7% in terms of the transactional and interpersonal texts 45.3% and in terms of the four language skills 64%. It can be concluded that the English textbook entitled Developing English Competencies 3 for the twelfth grade at senior high school is a good textbook since it has met most of the requirements stated in the 2006 standard of competence and the percentage of overall conformity was 72%. It means that the textbook is relatively suitable to be used as learning materials for teachers and students at twelfth grade senior high school. The researcher suggest that the teachers using the textbook to prepare some supplementary and other audio materials in order to cover the drawbacks of the textbook the writers of the textbook should improve the quality of the textbook by considering several aspects and for future researchers who want to conduct a similar study are suggested to use different criteria on evaluating the textbook or different textbook of different grade as the subject of their study to enrich their research.
